An interview with Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner

Ben LaMothe

Suddenly Canada is the place to be if you’re a band looking to make it big. First it was Calgary sisters Tegan & Sara, then Toronto indie pop group Stars. But by and large the place to be for Canadian music is Montreal. The Arcade Fire jumped to the forefront of the indie music world, and soon after Islands began to carve out their niche. Following suit is Wolf Parade, who released their newest album “At Mount Zoomer” on June 17. Ben LaMothe chatted with frontman Dan Boeckner about the new album, their relationship with Arcade Fire and how the band is preparing for the collapse of the music industry.

Now he has returned to the Shelter for a show with his and Chiodos vocalist Craig Owens’ side project, Cinematic Sunrise. About me:I tell people I've been practicing journalism since I was 16, only I didn't know it at the time. If my high school didn't have a radio station, I don't know what I'd be doing today. So, my journalism career started with high school radio. Then after a few years I started hosting my own show at Oakland University during the evening and my normal show at high school during the day. Then there was the school newspaper, which I contributed to for a while. Then I graduated and tried my hand at being an English major. It didn't go well. Now I'm at CMU, doing it fifth-year senior style. My career goal is to live and work in Europe either as a correspondent for an American newspaper/magazine, or for a European publication.

About Me: Well, I lived my first five years in Essex, U.K. (no, I do not have an accent. Sorry.) Ford Motor Co. brought us to the United States in '92 and it is here that I have tried and failed at every sport, taught sailing, archery, and woodworking to children, got my first job as a paper girl, and took my first photo. I have always been the youngest in the group. My passions in life are reading, my cat, Basil, my friends, and eating. Photography has always been the answer to my inability to put into words what I come across in life. I love to capture moments and remember every detail. My goal in life is to travel the world.

Major/Minor: Journalism/Public Relations and Spanish
About me: I was born and raised in Lapeer, a small town in the metro Flint area and graduated with a class of about 300 from Lapeer West High School in 2004. When I first came to CMU I thought I wanted to become a teacher and follow in my family's footsteps, however my passion changed shortly after learning about who I really am both in and outside of the classroom. I realized that I didn't really want to be stuck in the typical nine to fiver, but be able to experience things that other people may not get to in their work day and write about it. At the end of my sophomore year, I began my career as a journalist and expanded my horizons by writing for the school newspaper fro a short time. Now as a Senior I have committed to joining; Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Zeta Theta Pi, and Grand Central. In the future I hope to travel the world and become a publicist, translator, or writer for a magazine.

About Me:I grew up in Warren, Mi (a city boy). I now live in the small town of Algonac with less than 4,000 habitants. I went to a small grade school and high school – my senior graduating class was only 40. Coming to CMU was a big change for me but I love every minute of it. I am a senior, and after this summer will only need to complete an internship to graduate. My passion is sports, thus I am the sports editor. My favorite sport is college football. The two schools I root for most are Michigan, and of course CMU first and foremost (it’s great to be a Chippewa fan these days isn’t it)? I love the Tigers, Redwings and Pistons too. Michigan State? Not so much. I hope to live my dreams and become an athletic director, coach, or general manager some day.

Hometown: Harbor Beach, MI
Major/Minor: Journalism/Public Affairs
About Me: I was born in the thumb of Michigan but have lived in Mt. Pleasant since I was five years old. My mother was attending CMU at the time while my father worked two jobs to support his family consisting of my mother, sister, and I (my brother was born in 1996). I attended a very small high school, graduating 3rd of only 76 seniors. I loved high school and was an active student. I am very athletic and participated in basketball, volleyball, and track throughout high school. English was my favorite subject and so I am pursuing a career in Journalism. I am fascinated with the fashion industry and am a subscriber to many magazines, yet Elle remains my favorite. I can see myself graduating and working in many fields: editing a fashion magazine, working in a modeling agency, working as a public relations specialist for a government agency, or even owning an online publication.

About me: Here I am in my last semester at CMU, and I can honestly say it’s the only time I’ve felt the world at my fingertips. Life has always been one giant challenge for me and, for the first time ever, I’m ready to conquer it with confidence. Growing up in a small town has made me realize that my heart is in a big city… whichever one that may be. Beyond graduation I plan to work in the entertainment industry doing PR/advertising, and eventually earn my Masters degree in a related field. While I’m a bit nervous about beginning this new life, I can say with a high degree of certainty that it’s going to be a great experience.
