What do you get when you put 32 fashion designers, lots of anxious models and a sold out crowd in Finch Fieldhouse?

Give up? The answer is the 2008 THREADS fashion show!

THREADS is a student produced fashion show organized by the apparel merchandise and design department at Central Michigan University.

On Saturday, April 5, THREADS celebrated its 10th year with the theme of “Inspired.”

“It is a great way for students to showcase their work,” said Armine Ghalachyan, a sophomore and student in AMD.

And like fashion shows in Milan, Paris and Rome, THREADS’ annual event is a full production, complete with music, lights and a runway.

Every year students in the department let their creative juices flow as they stitch and sew collections of garments to feature in the show.

However the designers aren’t the only ones who spend days and nights preparing for the show. The class entitled Fashion Production and Promotion (HEV 357), takes on the behind the scene tasks.

The class is divided into different groups in order to assist in the planning of the show. These students are responsible for the preparation of all of the music for the show, creating the stage design, advertising the event, as well as working on the exhibition and reception portion of THREADS.

Months of hard work go into planning for the big day. This year, THREADS was co-produced by AMD students Lindsay Gibbons and Nate Sage, and was advised by AMD instructor Amy VanAuken.

“When everyone says ‘Amy the show was great,’ I tell them, ‘I’ll let the students know you said so,’” VanAuken said. “It is a joy watching everyone see it all come together,” she said.
